Compare ferries to Capri

Naples is the main gateway and the only crossing that carries vehicles at all. Caremar sails year round, with SNAV and NLG adding fast services. The operator matters less than the pier: fast craft leave from Molo Beverello below Castel Nuovo, conventional ferries from Calata Porta di Massa further east inside the port. Sorrento to Capri

Sorrento is the shortest of the year-round crossings and the busiest: Alilauro Gruson, Caremar, SNAV, NLG, Laser Capri and Seremar share the corridor. Staying on the Sorrento coast saves a good hour of ground travel compared with Naples. All boats leave from Marina Piccola in Sorrento, not from the neighbouring harbours of Piano di Sorrento or Seiano, which are separate departure points with their own timetables. Positano and Amalfi to Capri

From the Amalfi Coast the crossing is quick and direct, but seasonal. Positano is served by Alicost, Alilauro Gruson, NLG, Positano Jet, Grassi Junior and Cooperativa Sant'Andrea; Amalfi by Alicost, NLG, Positano Jet and Sant'Andrea. Neither has a sheltered harbour entrance, only a quay on an open coast, so sailings are dropped here sooner than in Naples when a swell gets up. Salerno and the Amalfi Coast towns

Salerno is the only Amalfi Coast port on the main railway line, which makes it the practical entry point if you arrive by train from the south. Alicost, Grassi Junior, NLG and Sant'Andrea run the route through the summer half of the year, while Alicost and Sant'Andrea call at the small towns in between: Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori and Minori. Those quays see only a handful of sailings a day, often a single one out and back, and the crossings take considerably longer than from Sorrento because the boats call at several places along the coast. As a day trip it only works if you plan the return first.

Castellammare and the Sorrento Peninsula

Castellammare di Stabia sits on the Circumvesuviana line between Naples and Sorrento and is served by Alilauro Gruson, NLG, SNAV and Seremar. On the peninsula itself, Laser Capri runs the smaller departure points: Piano di Sorrento and Seiano north of Sorrento, plus Portici and Torre del Greco on the Vesuvius shore. These lines operate through the summer half of the year, typically once or twice a day, and mainly make sense when your accommodation is right there.

Ischia and Procida to Capri

Island hopping between the Campanian islands is a purely seasonal offer. From Ischia the operators are Alicost, Alilauro, Capitan Morgan and Laser Capri Linee Blu. Ischia has several harbours and the boats call at Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno and Forio as well as Ischia Porto; for you that is one decision, the quay nearest your base, and the crossing time depends on where you board. From Procida, Alicost runs the link and the season ends in late September. All of these are direct sailings with no mainland transfer; if one is cancelled, the alternative is the longer way round via Naples.

Which departure port should you choose?

Four questions settle it. Where do you start? Coming from central Naples, the airport or the main station, Naples is the obvious choice; from the Sorrento coast, Sorrento is far shorter; from the Amalfi Coast, the direct boats save a long bus ride. When do you travel? Between November and March only Naples and Sorrento remain in the timetable. How much luggage do you have? Fast craft treat large suitcases differently from one operator to the next. And how do you get back? On the seasonal lines the last sailing is often in the early afternoon.

That leaves the vehicle question, which works differently on Capri than on most islands. The Campania region bars non-residents from bringing vehicles onto the island, in 2026 from 30 March to 2 November and again over the turn of the year. A bookable vehicle fare from an operator is not permission to do so. Expect to explore Capri on foot and by bus, taxi and funicular, and leave the car in Naples or Sorrento.
